Tarsi" <tarsi@ECLIPSE.NET> Subject: Civil Engineering Software Practices To: Multiple recipients of list CIVIL-L <CIVIL-L@unb.ca> I am a relatively new member of this mailing list, and would like help in obtaining information about civil engineering software practices. My CAD company has recently had a request to develop a stormwater runoff modeling application. Before getting too involved in this project, we'd like to find out what we can about the software "industry" for civil engineering. (Most of my personal background has been providing CAD for electrical engineering applications, an industry that I know quite well.) Through Internet searches we have discovered university programs and a scattering of moderately-sized commercial companies, but are not sure that our investigation has been thorough enough. I'd appreciate any feedback concerning sources of software (public domain, universities, commercial companies) and general software practices (quality of software, support, prices, availability, training, user expections, etc) for civil engineers. The immediate interest is stormwater, but information on GIS, groundwater, or similar areas would also be beneficial. Thanks in advance to anyone posting a reply or sending me a direct e-mail response. If there is a more relevant mailing list to be working with, I would also appreciate that information. I will gladly post a summary of my findings after reviewing the responses. Michael Tarsi tarsi@eclipse.net
