I am a civil engineer (Univ of Michigan), currently doing non-profit
engineering work in the development sector.

A colleague working with a composting toilet company, with whom we have
worked, asked me an engineering question I could not answer.

I pose this question to you and ask that, if you can help answer it,
respond to my email address: resource@world.std.com or fax me at
617 522-0690.

Thank you very much.

The question:

We have a composting toilet base (specs below) that currently has a
superstructure (bathroom) made of 2" sandwich panels. We are considering
using other materials, including wood, for the superstructure, but we do
not know the weight bearing load of the base.

What is the maximum weight bearing load of the base?

Specifications on the base:
The base is made of rotationally molded high density linear polyethylene
resin that conforms with the following specifications:

Density (ASTM D792) 0.946 TG/CM3
Tensile Strength at Yield (ASTM D638): 3650 psi
Impact brittleness Temp (ASTM D746-79) <-178 F
Dart Impact (-40C, 125 mil thickness): 130 FT-lb
Envt Stress Crack Resistance (D 1693-70) >1,000 hrs

Base Size:
Length: 115 inches (292 cm)
Width: 65.5 inches (166.4 cm)
Height: 48 inches (121.9 cm)

(essentially a rectangular box with no top)

Estimated Building size:
Length: 88 inches (223.5 cm)
Width: 67 inches (170.2 cm)
Height: 88 inches (223.5 cm)

Overall weight of existing building and compost base: approx. 1800 lbs

Thanks.
