CODATA is an interdisciplinary Scientific Committee of the International
Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) which seeks to improve the quality,
reliability, management and accessability of data of importance to all
fields
of science and technology.

SCOPE
Quite frequently in science and industry, data and information systems are
being built independently yielding highly heterogeneous and distributed
systems producing fragmented views of data and information. Heterogeneity is
found at different levels:
* Different data representations and data models for similar objects.
* Different available operators to manipulate information units and their
relationship (especially different reasoning strategies and tools can be
found in various knowledge-based systems).
* Semantic differences and ambiguities (e.g., different meanings of one term
in different areas or organizations).
This creates a difficulty as users need systems that are able to share and
exchange information on a global basis in such a way that it is not
necessary
to know the detailed structure of each local data system and learn the
different access methods. The challenge in meeting this objective is
integration and standardization emphasizing when appropriate the information
management aspect of the problem.
Information management means providing users with just the information they
need for a particular problem presented in a way that supports their
mission.
This is not easy. Information management also includes issues of
acquisition, processing, organization, visualization, timeliness, utility,
quality, and accuracy. In particular, the growing impact of the World Wide
Web as a support for distributed data sources has raised new problems for
access to a large amount of information whose structure and content are a
priori unknown.
The workshop is intended to discuss different theoretical, technical, and
practical aspects of heterogeneous and complex data systems and of
information management. The discussion will focus on assessing the
requirements and the applicability of these areas in science and technology.

CALL FOR PAPERS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Contributed papers should address aspects of Management of Heterogeneous
Data, Information, & Knowledge, including, but not restricted to the
following:
* Heterogeneous systems and intelligent integration: models and tools
* Heterogeneous information environments in science, technology and
industry, e.g.,
- Civil engineering & construction
- Off shore petroleum safety
- GIS (Geographic Information Systems)
- Mechanical engineering (including automotive, aeronautics)
* Distributed information management
* Large international networks, i.e., environment sustainable development,
biodiversity and on-line museum information systems
* Bridging diverse ontologies and building large knowledge network
* Use of standards to deal with heterogeneity (STEP, POSC, and ISO)
* Assessment of commercial integrated and federated systems and knowledge
engines
* Prospective and commercial offerings especially in the World Wide Web
(WWW) environment.
