TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING FACULTY OPENINGS

The Department of Civil Engineering at Montana State University invites
applications for two tenure-track positions in Transportation to be
filled at the assistant or associate professor level with a starting
date of August 15, 1999. Other starting dates will be considered.

One position is in Transportation Systems and requires expertise in one
or more of the following areas: operations, safety, applications of
advanced technologies, human factors, and planning. The successful
candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses
in their area of expertise, develop an externally funded research
program, and contribute to department, university, and professional
service related activities. The position will have a split appointment
with the Department of Civil Engineering (www.coe.montana.edu/ce/) and
the Western Transportation Institute (www.coe.montana.edu/wti/wti.htm).
WTI is a FHWA designated University Transportation "Super Center" and
conducts national and international research centering on rural
transportation. The center has a strong educational component and
operates with a $5 million annual budget. Requirements for the position
include a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, previous research experience in
one or more of the areas noted above, a record of publication, excellent
written and oral communication skills, and eligibility for professional
registration in Montana. Preferred qualifications include a B.S. in
Civil Engineering, university teaching and grant administration
experience, and current registration as a professional engineer.

The second position is in Transportation Materials. Candidates applying
for this position should have expertise in one or more of the following
areas: pavement material characterization, pavement design, pavement
modeling, nondestructive testing, and pavement management. The
department will consider candidates suitable for one of two faculty
tracks for this position. The first track is a research tenure-track
appointment with duties, requirements, and qualifications identical to
those of the Transportation Systems position described above, with the
exception that a B.S. in Civil Engineering is required.

The second track for the Transportation Materials position is a
professional tenure-track appointment. The successful candidate will be
expected to teach undergraduate courses, limited graduate courses,
conduct applied research, interface with professional engineering
groups, and contribute to department, university, and professional
service related activities. Requirements include a B.S. and M.S. in
Civil Engineering, professional practice experience, excellent written
and oral communication skills, and eligibility for professional
registration in Montana. Preferred qualifications include a Ph.D. in
Civil Engineering, university teaching experience, applied research
experience, a record of publications, and current registration as a
professional engineer.

The department consists of 400 Civil Engineering undergraduate students,
250 Construction Engineering Technology undergraduate students, 50
graduate students, and 20 full-time faculty offering EAC/ABET accredited
B.S. degrees in Civil Engineering and a TAC/ABET accredited degree in
Construction Engineering Technology, M.S. degrees in Civil Engineering
and Environmental Engineering, and the Ph.D. degree in Engineering. The
department is home to the Local Technical Assistance Program and the
Western Transportation Institute, and it participates in MSU's Center
for Biofilm Engineering, an NSF funded and designated Engineering
Research Center.

Bozeman is a small (30,000) town in a rural setting with abundant
opportunities for outdoor recreation. Nationally renowned ski areas and
blue ribbon trout streams exist within a 20-mile radius of town. Bozeman
is in close proximity to Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and Glacier National
Parks. Excellent facilities and faculty exist in the public school
system. Additional information on the department, university and
surrounding area may be found at www.montana.edu.

Candidates for all positions should prepare a letter of application,
transcripts, CV, and the names, addresses, and phone number of three
references. For the Transportation Systems position, send the
application to Dr. Jerry Stephens, Department of Civil Engineering,
Montana State University, Bozeman, MT 59717. Transportation Materials
candidates should clearly mark the tenure-track position for which they
are applying and send the application to Dr. Steve Perkins at the same
address. Screening of applications will begin March 15, 1999.
