The programs UUENCODE and UUDECODE are usually available from your Internet provider Email systems that allow files to be attached to email messages have made this method of transferring files by email unnecessary. Bruce Swanney P.E. Winzler & Kelly, Guam Those of you that are using Window's95 and Norton's Navigator will have UUencode and UUdecode as part of the Navigator. Currently, the Internet doesn't allow for the transmittal of binary files through listservices (they are available through FTP sites). Binary files can not be transfered through email accounts either (for example from Compuserve to AOL). They can be transfered through email only if the server (ie AOL) is the same at the sending and receiving end. To make large files or binary files transmit through newsgroups or listservices they must be turned into ASCII files (text files). The UU programs convert a binary file to text file for sending and re-convert it back to binary once it is received. Another limitation of encoded files has been the size of the file. Recently I am seeing new methods of transfering larger files through newsgroups. A large file had to be broken down into sizable blocks (which is done by the program) and submitted in the form of; Block1.uue Block2.uue BlockX.uue. Once the blocks are received, UUdecode mends them back together and converts them back into binary format. As of today, it seems that this is the best way to deal with binary transfers, but new technology is on the way. If you are an AOL user (or similar platform) use the software search for UUencode or UUdecode and download the programs to your computer. Instructions accompany the software. Internet users can search with Webcrawler (http://www.webcrawler.com) or similar search engines. If there is enough call for this one, I'll see what I can do about getting it on the SEAOC FTP site (accessible through our web page). Dennis Wish PE
