The 94 and 97 UBCs require both flanges of beams at the point of intersection of chevron braces in special concentric braced frames to be laterally supported directly or *indirectly*. 2211.9.4.1 The 94 NEHRP Recommended provisions do not require direct lateral support but do require the beam to be designed for a lateral load = 1.5% of flange strength. (But no load combination is specified!) For **indirect** support, has your local B.O. allowed you to design per the NEHRP provisions? Would appreciate comments on this approach. Thanks, Dave Evans
